FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Police in Michigan are dealing with a heavy mystery after a man reported a 5,000-pound bridge stolen from his property in a Detroit suburb. Robert Cortis filed a report with the Farmington Hills Police Department Wednesday saying he visited his property in Farmington Hills, where he no longer lives,

and discovered the 5,000 pound wood-and-steel bridge his father constructed decades ago was missing. "My heart dropped. I felt lost," Cortis told WXYZ-TV. "It has sentimental value." Cortis said he had visited the property Wednesday to begin arrangements to have the bridge transported to his catering company to serve as a setting for wedding photos. Cortis said he will not seek to press charges if the bridge is returned. "If we can get it returned, the police investigation is over," he said. "If not, it continues on."

Families sue hospital 20 years after baby switch

 

GRASSE, France, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- The French families of two 20-year-old women are suing the hospital where they were mistakenly switched at birth. The families made a court appearance Tuesday in Grasse as part of their lawsuit, which is seeking a total of $15 million. Sophie Serrano told the court her daughter, Manon, suffered from jaundice when she was born in July 1994 and she was placed in an incubator with another newborn girl with the same condition. Serrano said she and her husband discovered when the girl was 10 that they were not her biological parents and she had been switched with the other girl when a nurse removed the infants from the incubator. Serrano and the other family's parents, who asked to remain anonymous, met their biological daughters when the girls were 10 years old, but they chose not to switch the children back. Sophie Serrano told the Nice Matin newspaper, however, she "instinctively loved" her biological daughter. "I have raised three children but in my heart I have four," Sophie Serrano said. The lawsuit names the clinic, two obstetricians, two pediatricians and an auxiliary nurse.

Woman: Jail threats won't stop loud sex

 

WASHINGTON, England, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A British woman who was given suspended jail sentences for violating a court order to stop having loud sex with her husband says she will not comply. Caroline Cartwright, who was given suspended jail terms of eight weeks and 12 weeks for violating the four-year anti-social behavior order, told a film crew for Channel 5's ASBO and Proud she will not comply with the court's demand that she spare her neighbors from the banging and screaming resulting from her trysts with Steve, her husband of 38 years. "As far as I'm concerned, that's what you should be doing," Cartwright said of her loud marital encounters. "Just relax. Go with the flow. It's not as if I'm having sex and think 'Oh, I'm making too much noise. I better be quiet.'" Cartwright was served with the ASBO after she was found to have breached a noise abatement order five times. The couple said they tried to appease neighbors by moving their late-night activities to the morning, but complaints have continued. “I don't see why I should stop having sex in my own house with my husband of 38 years," Cartwright said. "I'm sure there could be a lot worse things I could be doing."

MIAMI, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Federal prosecutors said a for-profit college in Florida hired "exotic dancers" to work as "admissions representatives" to attract young men to the school. The U.S. attorney's office and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who joined a whistle-blower lawsuit against Miami-based FastTrain College, said in a civil complaint at least one of the school's now-closed seven campuses used strippers as "admissions representatives." The college "purposely hired attractive women and sometimes exotic dancers and encouraged them to dress provocatively while they recruited young men in neighborhoods to attend FastTrain," the complaint states. The whistle-blower lawsuit was originally filed by Juan Pena, a former admissions employee at the Plantation campus and the Flagler campus. The school's campuses were shut down in 2012 following a raid by the FBI. Alejandro Amor, chief executive officer of the company, was indicted in October on criminal charges of conspiracy and theft of government money. Federal authorities said the school received more than $35 million in Pell grants and other federal financial aid between 2009 and 2012, and they allege the school obtained a large amount of grant money through fraudulent means including falsifying high school diplomas for ineligible students

MELBOURNE, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- A woman hanging laundry on a clothesline in a Melbourne, Australia, back yard fell 10 feet into a sinkhole and had to tread water at the bottom, rescuers said. Melissa Beaumont said her mother, Christina Beaumont, 52, was


visiting an elderly friend to help with household chores Tuesday when she fell into the backyard sinkhole. Emergency responders said it was about 20 minutes before a neighbor heard her screams and called for help. Ambulance Victoria paramedic Stephanie Palamberis said Beaumont landed in water. "At one stage her head was under the water," Palamberis told The Age. "The woman told us she couldn't touch the bottom of the hole, so was trying to swim and stay afloat to avoid the risk of further mud collapse." Country Fire Authority operations officer Paul Carrig told news.com.au Beaumont "escaped without injury" but "was obviously shaken up" by her ordeal.

having that on his head," Audra Bohannon, of Northwest Harris County, Texas, told KPRC on Monday. Bohannon said the stray, thought to be a German Shepard mix, probably stuck his head into a plastic pet feeder in her barn. She and her family spent weeks trying to catch him. When they finally did, Bohannon and her family cut the jug open with metal shears. She posted video of his rescue on her Facebook page.

GESVRES, France, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- A French inventor says pills he developed to make bodily gases smell like chocolate were inspired by a particularly flatulent meal with friends. Christian Poincheval, 65, of Gesvres, said his Lutin Malin -- or Crafty Imp -- line of pills can make a customer's bodily gases smell like chocolate, roses or violets. Poincheval developed the chocolate scent specially for Christmas. The website selling the products bills the pills as "The Father Christmas fart pill that gives your farts the scent of chocolate." "It's a nice present for the festive season," Poincheval told The Local. "There will be a real need for these pills over Christmas." Poincheval said the invention was inspired by an uncomfortably flatulent dinner with friends about six years ago. "We had just come back from Switzerland and we were eating a lot with our friends and the smell from the flatulence was really terrible. We couldn't breathe so me and a friend decided something had to be done," Poincheval said. The pills are billed as "100 percent natural" and include fennel, seaweed and blueberries among their ingredients.

Investigators allege that James Quigley, 34, twice had sex with the girl in her bedroom earlier this year, and sent her a series of inappropriate e-mail and text messages that commented on her looks and noted that they could be “friends with benefits,” according to probable cause affidavit. Quigley, seen at right, was arrested Thursday night on two felony counts, sexual assault and maintaining an improper relationship with a student. He remains locked up in the Dallas County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond. Police began investigating Quigley last week, when the girl’s mother contacted cops to report that the teen was being harassed by the Richardson High School educator. A woman with the last name of Crook was arrested for burglary at a department store in Alhambra Friday night, police said. Josephine Crook, 49, was arrested at a Kohl’s department store on the 1200 block of South Fremont Avenue and is suspected of commercial burglary and possession of burglary tools. Crook allegedly was in possession of a pair of wire cutters and a pair of scissors. Crook allegedly took ladies’ undergarments and failed to pay for the items she concealed in her empty purse, police said.

ALAMOGORDO, N.M., Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A New Mexico city made $37,000 from auctioning 100 Atari games found in a landfill, with one copy of a game widely regarded as the worst ever going for $1,537. The City of Alamogordo sold 100 of the Atari 2600 games on eBay after they were unearthed from a local landfill in a project masterminded by Joe Lewandowski, vice president of the Tularosa Basin Historical Society. The $37,000 proceeds from the auctions will be split by the city and the historical society, officials said.Lewandowski said the auction's success exceeded expectations. "It seemed like every seven to 10 minutes it went up a thousand dollars, a thousand dollars, so it was just instantaneously 24, 25, 26. It just kept on going way beyond anything we expected," he told KRQE-TV.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Police in Colorado responding to a report of gunfire said they discovered two drunk men shooting at bottles in a makeshift basement shooting range. Colorado Springs police said officers responded to a report of gunfire being heard coming from a home shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday and they arrived to find the front door open and gunshots coming from the basement. The officers found three people in the basement, including two who were taking turns shooting at bottles with a handgun. The third person was just watching and had not fired the weapon, police said. Christian Clark, 28, and Codie Leslie, 23, were arrested on charges of prohibited use of weapons and reckless endangerment.

NEW YORK - A Connecticut man accused of snatching his DWI test results and attempting to eat them was charged with obstruction and criminal tampering, police




said.New York State Police stopped 40-year-old Kenneth Desormes on suspicion of speeding on Interstate 95, not far from the Connecticut state line, early on Sunday morning, police said in a statement.Desormes, who appeared drunk, was arrested and taken into a trooper station in Tarrytown, New York, about 25 miles north of Manhattan, police said.When troopers printed out the results of Desormes' breathalyzer results, which showed a blood alcohol level of 0.13 percent - above the New York state legal limit of 0.08 percent - he grabbed the paper printout and attempted to eat it, police said.Desormes was charged with driving while intoxicated, obstructing governmental administration and criminal tampering, all misdemeanor offenses, police said.It was not immediately clear whether Desormes was in custody on Tuesday or whether he had obtained a lawyer.

HERCULES, Calif., Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Police in northern California said the contents of a suspicious baggie found in an 8-year-old girl's Halloween candy tested positive for methamphetamine. Investigators in Hercules, located about 25 miles northeast of San Francisco, said the girl's father discovered the baggie while going through her candy and turned it over to police. Police spokeswoman Connie Van Putten said the contents of the baggie tested positive for meth. She said police have not received any similar reports, but parents are being urged to look through their children's candy hauls for anything suspicious. Hercules Police Sgt. Ezra Tafesse said the baggie contained about a tenth of a gram of meth, "enough for felony charges filed for possession of a controlled substance." Police said they do not yet know if the baggie was given to the girl intentionally. Investigators are working to determine which house gave the drugs to the child

Discovery channel says it will air a show in which American explorer and author Paul Rosolie gets eaten alive by an anaconda. The network says Rosolie, 30, of New Jersey, wears a "snake-proof suit" as he enters the belly of the large snake found in the western Amazon. Discovery has already received some criticism for the show, with some concerned about the snake. On Twitter, Rosolie said he "would never hurt a living thing. But you'll have to watch #EatenAlive to find out how it goes down. “He also tweeted, "(People) say snakes only eat prey that is dead. In my experience, they (definitely) eat things alive." In an interview with Monga Bay earlier this year, Rosolie said he started working at an Amazon research station when he was 18 and knew that the jungle was where he belonged. A Polish casket company is raising eyebrows with its calendar featuring naked women alongside its products. The 2015 calendar for Lindner features black and white photos of women lying on, sitting on or standing beside coffins. Sometimes, fully dressed men also appear in the pictures. The company is the largest producer of coffins in Poland, making more than 11,000 each month, which are sold throughout Europe. A California woman who had 27 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in her car successfully got through a Customs checkpoint last night, but then mistakenly drove her vehicle into a lot reserved for suspect vehicles to be examined by federal agents. During the ensuing search of Sylvia Mashiah’s car--which had not been ordered--investigators found 17 packages of meth concealed in the 2006 Ford Focus’s rear quarter panels. The 33-year-old Mashiah, seen at right, was alone in her car when she approached the Otay Mesa Port of Entry at 7:45 PM Monday. The border crossing is one of three that connects San Diego with Tijuana, Mexico.As reported in a probable cause statement, Mashiah, a Los Angeles resident, was cleared for entry into the U.S. after a “primary” inspection. However, she “mistakenly drove the vehicle to the secondary lot where Customs and Border Protection Officers inspected the vehicle.”A “secondary” inspection involves a more thorough questioning of the driver, a closer inspection of the vehicle, and a canine review of the auto. An Oklahoma woman was arrested Friday for ordering food and drinks at a bar and then claiming her husband, Jesus Christ, would take care of the tab. Police in Maine arrested a woman after they pulled her over and saw she was dressed as Hello Kitty. Cops say she was also drunk and driving in the wrong lane. Cops pulled over Carrie Gipson, 37, when they spotted her car driving in the wrong lane on a road in Gorham, a town outside Portland. During the 2 AM traffic stop, police discovered that Gipson was dressed as the popular Japanese character, a white bobtail cat with a trademark red bow in her hair. A cockroach embarrassed a Chicago city official whose job includes pest control while he was making a presentation in council chambers Thursday. Needless to say, Fleet and Facilities Management Commissioner David Reynolds was embarrassed beyond belief. “I was mortified.…I had horrible luck on this one….The timing is ironic that, in the middle of my budget hearing, a cockroach decides to make itself known,” Reynolds told The Chicago-Sun Times.Ald. Brendan Reilly spotted the roach and then asked what the department’s budget was for pest control. He said he plans to call Rose Pest Control to vanquish council chambers of the creepy crawlies.

Man stole plates from unmarked police van

FOLESHILL, England, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- British police said officers noticed a man stealing the license plates from a parked van that was actually an unmarked police vehicle. West Midlands Police said officers working on Operation Trivium noticed a man unscrewing the license plates from an unmarked police van parked in Foleshill, England. The officers followed the man until he discarded the plates a short distance away. The 50-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of theft and going equipped to steal.

Operation Trivium is an international operation based in Birmingham, England, that targets foreign criminals using British roads. More than 800 people have been arrested since the operation began Oct. 20.

Swedish police said they arrested two men accused of attempting to smuggle more than 25,000 diapers from Norway to eastern Europe. Investigators said the Lithuanian nationals, whose identities were not released, were stopped by police in Jamtland, and officers soon discovered their van was hauling 25,175 fresh disposable diapers.Police said the diapers were purchased in Norway, where diapers cost less than $1 apiece, and were likely designed for the black market in eastern Europe, where the products can retail for considerably more money. Stefan Fredriksson of the Jamtland police told the Expressen newspaper the smugglers failed to disclose the contents of their van when they crossed the border. "They did not report that they were transporting the goods across the border from Norway to Sweden. You are accountable to report it to customs and pay the duty fee," Fredriksson said

Airline passenger detained over 'bomb' WiFi name

SEATTLE, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A Southwest Airlines passenger who named his WiFi hotspot "Bomb on Board" was

detained at Seattle-Tacoma Airport.  Passengers on Flight 3677 to Denver said they were waiting to depart Thursday when they noticed someone on the plane had named their WiFi hotspot "Southwest - Bomb on Board." The WiFi hotspot's name was changed to "Bomb Location 19E" before changing to "something about the stewardess being hot," passenger Ken Saldi told ABC News. "We realized he was probably just goofing off," Saldi said.

However, airport security was not willing to take that chance and the man behind the network names was detained. Passengers said they were taken off the plane for a time and their bags were re-screened before the flight was able to continue to Denver. Southwest said the pilot made the decision to report the potential security threat. A Port of Seattle representative told KIRO-TV, Seattle, the man was still in custody Thursday evening. His identity and possible charges against him were not released.

A 31-year-old Maryland man allegedly stabbed a co-worker for eating his meatball. Police were called to a business in Fallston, Md., on Sept. 4 around 11:10 a.m. after the two men got into an altercation. The 31-year-old man claimed his co-worker, 36, had taken a meatball from his lunch and eaten it, the Baltimore Sun reported. They argued and the 31-year-old allegedly stabbed the other man in the arm before fleeing the scene. He was later arrested and charges are pending. The injured co-worker was taken to hospital and treated.

When the woman was taken to the hospital to have the implants removed, officials recovered almost four pounds of cocaine. This is not the first time something like this has happened. Spanish police previously busted a Panamanian woman with more than three pounds of cocaine stuffed in her implants in 2012.

Woman, 33, Arrested After "Humping" Lawn Chairs, Exposing Self

 

A Washington woman who was wearing a short dress and no underwear is facing an indecent exposure charge after allegedly “humping” lawn chairs, exposing herself to a woman and two children, and urinating in public, according to police. Sila Hans, 33, was arrested earlier this month by cops responding to a report of “an intoxicated female exposing herself and urinating on the lawn” of a Seattle residence. A female witness told officers that Hans, seen above, “had come onto her lawn and was ‘humping’ the lawn chairs,” according to a Seattle Police Department report. The woman added that she and her two children--ages 15 and 11--watched Hans’s late-afternoon performance from a window in their home.

After grinding on the lawn chairs, Hans allegedly “exposed her vagina,” and then “smacked” her genitals “with her hand multiple times.” Additionally, the witnesses reported that Hans relieved herself on the lawn and “bent over and exposed her bottom.” Cops who confronted Hans reported that she was “extremely intoxicated” and “displaying erratic behavior.” She was “wearing a short dress with no underwear,” noted Officer Nicolas Olsen, who arrested Hans for indecent exposure.
