Newark, New Jersey's Valentine's Day sale: $1,000 plots of land
NEW YORK – Newark, New Jersey, which has long struggled with high crime rates and poverty, is offering plots of land for $1,000 apiece to couples on Valentine's Day, city officials said on Tuesday. The city, New Jersey's largest, is hoping fledgling families will
build new homes in some of its blighted areas, Deputy Mayor Baye Adofo-Wilson said. It is also a way to turn untaxed city-owned land into revenue-producing properties, he added. “We want to redevelop the city based on families and feel that this is an important way to jump-start that process," Adofo-Wilson said. The three-hour sale of 100 lots at Newark City Hall on Saturday morning will be held exclusively for couples, straight or same-sex, married or not, who plan to build a home on their land within 18 months and live there for at least five years. The lots, most of which run 25,000 square feet, are concentrated in the city's west and south wards in working-class or low-income neighborhoods. A city spokesman was unable to give the lots' market value. Only one lot will be sold per couple on a first-come first-served basis. Buyers must make a $500 down payment on their lots on Valentine's Day and pay an additional $500 at closing.

How Florida couple get trapped in garbage truck
TAMPA, Fla. - A man and a woman sleeping in a dumpster after a night of drinking at a Florida casino ended up at a hospital complaining of back pain after they had to be rescued from a garbage truck, police said. The garbage truck driver was on his route in Tampa Tuesday morning when he heard yelling and banging from the back of his vehicle, police said. Upon pulling over, he discovered Donald Jordan, 37, and Lisa Sirbella, 49, in the back of the truck. They had been sleeping in a dumpster beside a Tampa restaurant when its contents were emptied into the truck. "It was originally believed that they were homeless but it seems they were just really intoxicated after hanging out at the casino," the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Unable to get them out, the driver summoned authorities, who were able to free the pair. The man and woman had no visible injuries but were taken to a hospital after complaining of back pain, police said. The pair's relationship to each other was not immediately clear, police said. "Luckily the driver was able to hear their screams but had the trash been compacted, this case would have ended very differently," said Cristal Bermudez Nunez, a sheriff's office spokeswoman.
Funeral director jailed for faked 77 deaths for insurance money
HOLDEN HILLS, Australia, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- An Australian funeral director accused of faking more than 70 deaths to pocket the insurance money was sentenced to at least three years in jail. Holden Hills Magistrates Court heard Robin George Knight, 45, faked the deaths of 77 clients who had prepaid funeral contracts and used the more than $540,000 he received through the scam to pay bills and other business costs. The court heard one of the insurance companies that contracted through Knight's funeral home is refusing to honor the contracts of Knight's victims, leaving 38 people without their prepaid funeral service. Knight pleaded guilty to about 100 counts of theft and deception. "It is a daily struggle to live with the consequences of my actions, particularly how a number of people have been let down and left with a severe disadvantage," he said. "I deeply regret my actions and apologize to everybody concerned." Magistrate Cathy Deland sentenced Knight to four years and six months in prison, with a non-parole period of three years.
Denied Sex, Woman Pulled Gun on Boyfriend
FEBRUARY 16--After having her “sexual advances” rejected by her live-in boyfriend, a South Carolina woman allegedly threatened to shoot her beau, cops allege. Ryan Rucker, 33, was sleeping early yesterday when Michelle Smart, by her own admission, “attempted to make some sexual advances toward” him, according to a police report detailing the 2 AM incident. Rucker told cops that he pushed the 30-year-old Smart off of him, which prompted an argument during which Smart “told him she would shoot him because she has the gun.” Smart told officers that after Rucker “rejected her and pushed her off of him,” he punched and kicked her multiple times. Cops noted that Smart “continually was changing her story throughout the investigation,” adding that, “For these reasons, Ms. Smart’s account became less believable. “Smart, judged the “primary aggressor” by cops, was arrested for domestic violence since Rucker “feared for his safety when Ms. Smart pulled the gun out and threatened to use it.” Cops seized a Ruger handgun and six bullets, which were placed into evidence. Seen in the above mug shot, Smart spent about eight hours in custody before bonding out of jail Sunday afternoon on the misdemeanor charge
