BRADFORD, Ont. — A 15-year-old girl died in a freak accident at a local soccer pitch when one of the nets tipped over Wednesday afternoon. South Simcoe police, paramedics

and firefighters were called to a soccer field at the Portuguese Cultural Centre near the Holland Marsh around 3:30 p.m. Police said two 15-year-old girls were playing soccer on the field when one became trapped under the crossbar of the net.  She was treated at the scene and transported to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries."At this point, we have all our resources here as well as at the hospital," Sgt. Sean Willan said.Linda Fresco, supervisor at the nearby daycare centre in the Bradford Alliance Church, was alarmed by the police activity across the road.She went to the scene "out of concern for the kids" and was shocked to learn of the death. It's very sad, tragic," she said.

OTTAWA ─ If you didn’t already know, you can’t go skinny dipping at the police station.It's a message MRC des Collines police in Quebec, just east of Ottawa, never thought they'd ever have to convey, but recent events have forced their hand.Shortly after 4 p.m. Friday an officer was returning to the station, located along the Gatineau River. The officer watched a woman drive into the station parking lot and head into the "authorized personnel only" area behind the building. He spotted the woman walking around in a red bathing suit, but by the time he arrived the suit lay on the ground without an owner.That's when he realized the woman was enjoying a skinny dip near the private police boat launch.Averting his eyes as best he could, the officer called to the woman, according to Const. Martin Fournel.

This is private property."The woman got out of the water and put her bathing suit back on as the officer tried to figure out what on Earth possessed her to choose the only police station for miles as an ideal spot for a skinny dip. Fournel said the woman gave an obviously false name and address, which led to further interrogation and threats of obstruction charges. Eventually, she relented and identified herself as a 49-year-old Ottawa woman who claimed she was visiting a friend across the road. She wasn't charged, but will be mailed a $200 ticket for indecent exposure, and perhaps a map to naturist facilities

Fox journalists say they were touched, pinched and scratched in haunted house

A reporter for Fox in Pennsylvania says something pinched her while she was covering a story about a haunted house. "I've been touched and pinched," Katie Kyros tells the camera while at the York County home of DeAnna Simpson. Her cameraman, Nick Petrillo, claims he was scratched. Simpson says there are at least five ghosts in her home, including a demon that she says she's photographed as a shadowy figure in her basement using a deer camera, which can be set up to take photos when motion is detected. After Petrillo reacts to something while filming an interview segment with Simpson, she asks, "Did you get scratched?" When he says he does have a scratch on his wrist, she puts holy water on him. "That is their way of a warning," Simpson said of the ghosts. Kyros said she isn't as skeptical about ghosts after her experience in the home.

QUEBEC CITY - Partner-swapping, an erotic clothing parade and sex games will be featured at a swingers festival that has rankled town officials and raised questions about the event's legality.  The Adam & Eve nudist camp in Sainte-Brigitte-des-Saults, an hour east of Montreal, will host the event from August 7 to 12. MARYVILLE, Tenn., July 23 (UPI) --The owner of a Tennessee restaurant wants her customers to feel comfortable bringing guns into her family-friendly establishment and that attitude has caused business at the eatery to shoot up. Sharma Floyd posted a "Guns are Welcome" sign on the front door of Shiloh Brew and Chew in Maryville to let her patrons know she supports their constitutional right to bear arms even though she doesn't carry herself. Floyd got the idea for the sign after reading about a North Carolina business that got robbed at gunpoint after putting up a "No Weapons Allowed" sign. She does try to stop people with guns from drinking by asking people who order beer if they are carrying. "If they say 'Yes, I have an ankle strap on', I say 'Sorry, then you can't drink,'" Floyd told WBIR. "We sell very, very little beer here, but we do offer it. I don't have a liquor license. I won't get a liquor license." According to Floyd, the sign helped bring in more than 20 new customers, so she put up a few more. "I can honestly say I've gotten way more support than the one person who really gave me a lot of grief over it," said Floyd. "The 'Guns are Welcome' signs have helped boost business."

Man reports fake murder to avoid ticket

A Florida man called 911 to report a man with a gun was about to murder him in order to get out of a traffic ticket and it almost worked, police say. Just after Julius Lupowitz, 53, had been stopped by an officer on June 24 for speeding, two 911 calls were made where a man was asking for help because another man had a gun and "there was going to be a murder," West Melbourne Police said in a release Thursday.After the man hung up, dispatchers traced the phone number and alerted officers Lupowitz owned the phone. Officer Ted Salem, who had pulled Lupowitz over in the traffic stop, explained Lupowitz was not in any danger beyond getting a $210 ticket for speeding. Lupowitz faces a third-degree felony charge for misusing the 911 system. If guilty, he could be sentenced to five years in prison. He was also cited for speeding. West Melbourne is 100 km southeast of Orlando.

An Alabama man who went in to a hospital last month for a circumcision awoke after surgery to find his penis had been amputated, his lawyer said on Thursday. Johnny Lee Banks Jr., 56, said in a lawsuit filed in state court earlier this week that no one at the Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, had told him why it had been necessary to remove his penis, according to his attorney, John Graves."My client is devastated," Graves said.

Banks, who is married and does not work due to a disability, did not recall the precise date of the incident but believed it occurred in June, his attorney said. The lawsuit does not specify a monetary value of the damages, Graves said. Named as defendants in the lawsuit are the hospital, the Simon-Williamson Clinic, Urology Centers of Alabama and two doctors, Graves said. Spokeswomen for the hospital, the clinic and Urology Centers of Alabama did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

U.S. beauty pageant winner sues after being stripped of crown

A beauty pageant winner who was stripped of her Miss Delaware crown for being a few months too old is suing the Miss America organization, saying officials knew her age and disqualified her unfairly, court documents filed on Wednesday show. The lawsuit filed in Delaware's Court of Chancery by Amanda Longacre seeks $3 million in damages and her reinstatement as Miss Delaware so she can compete in the Miss America pageant in September.

She said she did nothing wrong and was honest when she applied to take part in the pageant, providing her birth certificate, driver's license and other documents. Rules for the pageant, the state preliminary for Miss America, require that Miss Delaware contestants be no older than 24, and say they cannot turn 25 before the end of the year. Longacre's 25th birthday will be on Oct. 22. Sam Haskell, chief executive and board chairman of the Miss America pageant, said Longacre would get the $9,000 scholarship given to the winner, as would the new Miss Delaware. Longacre won the title on June 14, but was replaced in late June by the first runner-up, 23-year-old Brittany Lewis of Wilmington, Delaware. PORTLAND, Ore. - A Romanian princess and her husband pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one charge of running an illegal gambling operation for their involvement in a cockfighting ring in rural Oregon. Irina Walker, 61, daughter of exiled former Romanian King Michael, and her husband John Walker, 68, appeared in federal court in Portland in connection with cockfights they held in Irrigon, Ore., in 2012 and 2013. They had originally denied any wrongdoing, but Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Peifer said that, under the agreement to change their plea, the couple will sell their ranch and forfeit $200,000 to the government in lieu of incarceration.

Cockfighting is illegal under federal law, and under the laws of every state. The Walkers were originally charged with 12 counts including operating an illegal gaming business, conspiracy and violating the Animal Welfare Act. Each count had carried a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. They initially held the contests outside at their ranch but later built a barn-like structure "used as an arena," Peifer told the court. He said they rented portable toilets, hired someone to cook Mexican food, and also sold alcoholic drinks.

He told her she was more suited to the role than Winslet or Knightley. In return, the former N-Dubz star allegedly boasted she could ‘sort out’ drugs for a boys’ night out she was arranging for him. The 26-year-old put him in touch with her rapper friend, Mike GLC, who brought the cocaine to London’s five-star Dorchester Hotel, jurors heard.Contostavlos’s alleged drug deal was taped and exposed in a story in The Sun On Sunday last May. The suspect was seen to be employing a mobile electronic device with a built-in camera to record under the victim's dress. When the victim confronted the man, he bolted from the train at City Hall Station. JULY 9--A Delaware man wanted on a theft charge stashed 16 packets of heroin down his eight-month-old baby boy’s diaper when police spotted him walking yesterday on a New Castle street, investigators allege.

According to cops, Michael Penn recently swiped items from a Verizon store, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant for shoplifting. Police officers approached the 25-year-old Penn while he was walking Tuesday with his three children. Seen in the adjacent mug shot, Penn was carrying the baby and his five-year-old daughter. Directed by officers to put the children down, Penn initially refused, cops reported. At one point, Penn was seen placing something in the baby’s diaper, according to the New Castle City Police Department. Penn was eventually detained and a search of the child’s diaper turned up the heroin stash, which can be seen in a police evidence photo. The heroin packets were stamped with brand names like “Bioshock” and “Death.” In addition to the shoplifting count, Penn was booked into jail yesterday on narcotics, resisting arrest, and child endangerment charges. He was later released on $4500 bond. Penn’s children were turned over to the custody of his grandmother, and cops reported the incident to child welfare officials.

JUNE 30--A Pennsylvania woman masqueraded as a medical doctor and performed physicals on at least two male patients in her home, according to police. Investigators allege that Joann Elizabeth Wingate, 56, marketed her services to truckers who needed to have updated physicals so as to maintain their commercial driver’s license. Wingate, pictured below, this month examined a driver from California who spotted a sign she posted at a truck wash.

Wingate, a Cumberland County resident, was arrested Saturday on felony forgery, fraud, and identity theft charges. She is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail. State Police officials report that Wingate, who charged $65 for an exam, displayed a bogus medical certificate that contained information corresponding with the license of Dr. Barbara Wingate, a Philadelphia-area psychiatrist. The criminal probe of Wingate began when the California trucker became suspicious about her purported medical credentials (the man had been told by California authorities that there was a problem with forms faxed to them by Wingate). The trucker told cops that “Dr. Wingate” performed a complete exam, and even had him provide her with a urine sample.
