Wow-firefighters find deadly snakes after dousing house fire

Firefighters in Utah discovered a room full of snakes, six of which were deadly, when searching a home following a kitchen fire last week. North Davis Fire Chief Mark Becraft told ABC News the room of snakes was found during a routine sweep to ensure no one was still in the house. Among the 28 snakes found in the home, there were five albino western diamondbacks and a gaboon viper, both of which are deadly. Animal control and the wildlife officers were called in.

"The gaboon viper is considered one of the most dangerous snakes in the world," Brad Hunt of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources told ABC. It's illegal to have venomous snakes in Utah, and all other snakes must be registered. Officials believe the owner, who wasn't named, is a breeder. Most of the confiscated snakes were taken to an educational rehab centre for snakes and reptiles.

Why a Man hit golf balls at neighbour

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — A 37-year-old man has been charged with mischief for allegedly hitting golf balls over the Trent-Severn Waterway and into a neighbour's backyard. Police said it's not the first time the accused has done so and they've warned him in the past. On Saturday, one of the balls hit and damaged a piece of patio furniture, police said, and the residents had to go inside because they were afraid they’d be struck by an errant golf ball. Richard Alvarez is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 15.

Man tries to smuggle turtle onto plane in KFC hamburger

A Chinese man reportedly tried to smuggle his pet turtle past security at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in Guangdong, China by hiding it in a Kentucky Fried Chicken hamburger. The man, whose last name is Li, was on his way to board a China Southern Airlines flight to Beijing when he was stopped during the x-ray screening at the airport over an "odd protrusion" that was sticking out of a KFC burger inside his bag. Airport security soon determined the bump looked an awful lot like a turtle and decided to inspect Li's bag. “There’s no turtle in there, just a hamburger,” the man allegedly told authorities. “There’s nothing special to see inside.”

Sergeant Penny Dane posted nude pics while on duty

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., July 29 (UPI) -- Police in Florida said a sergeant has resigned after she was caught posting nude photos of herself on a website while on duty. Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said Sgt. Penny Dane, an 18-year veteran of law enforcement, resigned after admitting to being on duty while using her work computer to post sexually explicit pictures of herself online as part of a game called "Red Light Center," which is designed to resemble a virtual sex club, WKMG-TV, Orlando, Fla., reported Monday. "It's something in my 26 years in law enforcement that I've never seen," Chitwood said. Investigators said Dane would switch off the GPS tracking device in her patrol car so she could access the game while she was supposed to be supervising other officers.
Police said 177 sexually explicit images were found on her office desktop computer, 97 were found on the laptop in her patrol car and at least 23 of the pictures were of Dane. Chitwood said the pictures were "extremely pornographic in nature, and in several of the photos that we have since discovered, she was in her uniform." Police said Chitwood's activities were discovered when she accused another officer of sexual harassment and investigators looked over her emails.

New Zealand immigration officials say man is too fat to live there

A South African chef living in New Zealand has been told he's too fat to be allowed to live in the country. BBC News reports that immigration officials said Albert Buitenhuis, who weighs 130 kg did not have "an acceptable standard of health". Buitenhuis and his wife, Marthie, moved to Christchurch in 2007, and Marthie claims he weighed 160 kg at the time.
Until now, their annual work visas had been renewed with "very little problem," she said. "We applied year after year and there were no issues. They never mentioned Albert's weight or his health once and he was a lot heavier then." The couple appealed to New Zealand's immigration minister, citing the chef's recent weight loss. But an immigration spokesman said Buitenhuis's application had been rejected because his obesity put him at "significant risk" of complications including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Fifty Shades might be to blame for spike in handcuff mishaps

London firefighters say they've had to free dozens of people trapped in handcuffs recently in what they think might be the "Fifty Shades effect," prompting a cheeky warning for thrill-seekers to make sure they've got the keys before messing around.
"I don't know whether it's the Fifty Shades effect, but the number of incidents involving items like handcuffs seems to have gone up. I'm sure most people will be Fifty Shades of red by the time our crews arrive to free them," Third Officer Dave Brown of the London Fire Brigade said in a statement Monday. In the past three years, firefighters have been called to help 79 people trapped in cuffs. They've also helped nine men with rings stuck on their penises, and in the past, crews helped free a man whose penis was caught in a toaster and another whose manhood was lodged in a vaccum cleaner, the fire department said in the release. Since 2010, firefighters have also freed 18 kids with their heads stuck in potties or toilet seats.

Allegation of oral sex on rush hour train in Australia investigated

Police in Perth, Australia, are combing through closed-circuit TV footage after reports that a young woman performed oral sex on a man on a commuter train during rush hour Thursday. A witness, known as Kerry, told Australian media it occurred at around 5:30 p.m. in the middle carriage of the Armadale line. "I was a few feet down from them and in the corner there were two people, male and female, with the female giving the older male oral sex, in front of everyone," Kerry said, adding the rest of the group was drinking. The woman said there were children on the train at the time. Transit guards were in another carriage and didn't do anything about it when passengers approached them, Kerry said. Officials with the Perth Transport Authority said they're investigating
whether the act occurred and whether the transit guards could have behaved better.
